Center figure- she is set apart by the swan maiden rune, the eolhsecg, frequently used to denote valkyries or fylgjur.  At the left she is giving Weland the beer he needs to seduce his enemy’s daughter.  On the right, Weland escapes by transforming into a bird. A fylgja is a familiar spirit, the embodiment of a person’s soul, in animal form or appearing as a female ancestor.  Even in animal form, the fylgja is always female.  When appearing as an animal, she is recognizable because she has her charge’s eyes.
